No Successful ´Short Kut´ For New Releases ; ´Kambakkht Ishq´ Has A Good First Week Haul!

The coming Friday will see the release of the postponed `Dekh Bhai Dekh` and Mahesh Bhatt’s Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala directed Adhyayan Suman starrer, `Jashnn`. While `Dekh Bhai Dekh` has nil chances, for once even the Bhatt stable does not have a popular soundtrack or lucky mascot Emraan Hashmi to help `Jashnn`! And it means that it will be the Hollywood release, `Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince` and its sorcery battling it out with the still alive and kicking `New York` and `Kambakkht Ishq`.

 Short Kut  Verdict: Released
Weekly Earnings: UK$130,442  Total Earnings: UK$130,442
Last Friday’s main release, `Short Kut`, went in the expected direction. After a so-so first day (better in Bombay circuit) the film failed to improve. Trade feels that the Akshaye Khanna and Arshad Warsi starrer, `Short Kut`, will have a horrifyingly short and uneventful run at the box-office. For its all-world distributor, Indian Films, it will spell huge losses. Even in the Overseas, the film has fared poorly.

 Morning Walk  Verdict: Flop
Weekly Earnings: -  Total Earnings: -
Director: Arup Dutta  Producer: Tapan Biswas
Music: Jeet Gannguli  Lyrics: Sanjeev Tiwari, Dibyendu Mukherjee, Nida Fazli, Shaan
Starring: Anupam Kher, Sharmila Tagore, Rajit Kapoor, Divya Dutta, Shayan Munshi, Nargis, Avika Gor
 Genre: Emotional  Recommended Audience: General
Tapan Biswas and Inox Motion Pictures’ `Morning Walk`, saw a fair to poor opening (encouraging in some multiplexes of South India). Though a creditable effort, the film has been totally rejected.

 Sankat City  Verdict: Released
Weekly Earnings: -  Total Earnings: -
PB Rating: 9.0 out of 10  Public Rating (by 410 unique users): 5.11
Director: Pankaj Advani  Producer: Anubhav Sinha
Music: Ranjit Barot  Lyrics: Panchhi Jalonvi, Mehboob
Starring: Anupam Kher, Kaykay Menon, Rimi Sen, Chunky Pandey, Yashpal Sharma, Manoj Pahwa, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Hemant Pandey, Jahangir Khan, Veerendra Saxena, Shri Vallabh Vyas, Rahul Dev
Genre: Comedy  Recommended Audience: Parental Guidance
The last release of the same week, Seven Entertainment Ltd.’s Pankaj Advani directed , `Sankat City` saw dull start. The film has been appreciated by the critics and those who have seen it. And so ,`Sankat City`, despite being a slow starter has shown improvement over the weekend and may appeal to the audience, especially at good cinemas in the cities. In fact, the good news is that more prints have been added in the second week.

 Kambakkht Ishq  Verdict: Average
 Weekly Earnings: India Rs. 37.50 crore ; UK$169,923 ; US$343,468  Total Earnings: India Rs. 37.50 crore ; UK$893,449 ; US$1,272,076
PB Rating: 5.5 out of 10  Public Rating (by 411 unique users): 5.12
Director: Sabbir Khan  Producer: Sajid Nadiadwala
Music: Anu Malik, RDB, Salim and Sulaiman  Lyrics: Anvita Dutt Guptan, RDB
Starring: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards, Brandon Routh
Genre: Action  Recommended Audience: Parental Guidance
EROS International and Sajid Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.`s Akshay-Kareena starrer, `Kambakkht Ishq`, saw a great weekend but collections dropped noticeably from Monday evening and the fall was quite pronounced from Tuesday. In its opening week the Sabbir Khan directed film has a good haul to show, in the face of a huge critical bashing. `Kambakkht Ishq` has also performed quite well in the Overseas, mainly due to very stable US collections.

 New York  Verdict: Hit
 Weekly Earnings: India Rs. 9 crore ; UK$34,259  Total Earnings: India Rs. 36.75 crore ; UK $572,853 ; US$841,368
PB Rating: 8.0 out of 10  Public Rating (by 410 unique users): 5.11
Director: Kabir Khan  Producer: Aditya Chopra
Music: Pritam, Pankaj Awasthi  Lyrics: Sandeep Shrivastava, Junaid Wasi
Starring: John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Katrina Kaif, Irrfan Khan
Genre: Thriller  Recommended Audience: Parental Guidance
Meanwhile Yash Raj Films` Kabir Khan directed `New York` took a hit from `Kambakkht Ishq` in its second week and the collections fell heavily. Still the superb (for its cost and cast) first week shares have already done the trick for its worlwide distributor Yash Raj. The John Abraham, Katrina Kaif , Irrfan Khan and Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer has also done very well in the Overseas.
