Framed, but not replicated from, the 1960´s ´Gumrah´, "Bewafaa" traverses through traditional Indian culture to modern day times. Infedility vs. cultural faith are all explored in the east vs. west. dramatization. Anjali (Kareena Kapoor) is from Canada and has grown up a western young girl who believes in modern day culture despite her family being the traditional Indian family. While she has found love in a musician, Indian Raja (Akshay Kumar), her family is arranging for the marriage of her elder sister Aarti (Sushmita Sen). The man she is marrying is the succesful Aditya (Anil Kapoor), a wealthy man who is filled with self awareness and strong business sense. Aditya has no one really but his best friends, Dil (Manoj Bajpai) and Pallavi (Shamita Shetty) who are the ones closest to him. His awaited marriage to Aarti is somewhat of a second coming for him where he can leave all that he has done for his professional life and begin planning a loving family. And that he does until tragedy strikes. Aarti faces complications during the birth of their first child, twins in fact, and passes. This propels Anjali´s family to push her into marriage with Aditya, not only to fill the void of a wife but of a mother to take care of the new twins. Anjali is forced to accept and moves to India to be with her new "husband", leaving Raja and his heightened musical career behind. Anjali must now drop her modern characteristics and try to be a traditional Indian wife all the while pining for her real love Raja in Canada. Bewafaa describes her struggles which are heightened when Raja comes to India. Will she embrace him as a friend or lover? |
