His home production Mary Kom too was awarded the National Award last year.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's work of love, Bajirao Mastani, released nationwide last year, only to be received with an unprecedented response from the industry and the audience in Indian and overseas markets alike as millions across the globe showered immense love on the film and made it one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
Humbled by the honor says Sanjay Leela Bhansali, " This award is extremely special because it is a pat on the back for my work as a director rather than as a producer. I have bagged three National Awards before this for Devdas, Black and Mary Kom, but that doesn't make the excitement of having your work acknowledged by the entire nation any less spectacular. If there was anyone more ecstatic than me, it was my mother.Bajirao Mastani bagged seven National awards and these belong to the entire team who complemented each other so well and made this dream possible".
