Cinemas all over India are, perhaps, facing the worst time of their existence. In 1986, cinemas in Maharashtra had downed shutters in their fight against the state government for reduction in entertainment tax. Around that time, cinemas in Uttar Pradesh had also closed down, again to protest against government inaction. Barring such closures, cinemas in the country have never had it as bad as in the present times when producers have announced a halt to all new Hindi film releases.
Incidentally, the only Hindi film doing well in Bombay during this lean period is Aditya Chopra’s 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'. Even in its 705th combined week at Maratha Mandir cinema, it collected Rs. 30,496 in matinee shows. It had collected Rs. 24,151 in its 704th week (in 6 instead of 7 shows).
