Theatre Artistes Protest Against 'Mangal Pandey -The Rising'

Several theatre artistes organised a protest in Ballia (U.P.) against Aamir Khan starrer 'Mangal Pandey-The Rising', as the director Ketan Mehta did not shoot the film in the revoltionary's native village Nagwan in Ballia district . Asserting that if portions of the film were not shot in Mangal Pandey's native village Nagwan , they would also protest against the films screening . The protestors also burnt effigies of film's director Ketan Mehta .

Leading the agitation , Vivekanand Singh said Mehta , in his latest interview had said that there was dispute regarding the birth place of Mangal Pandey . However Singh said he had proof to show that the revolutionary was born in Nagwan . "Now the matter is not merely of the film's shooting , but concerns national pride ," he observed .

The Amar Shaheed Mangal Pandey Memorial Committee secretary , Om Prakash Tiwari , said notices were sent to the director Ketan Mehta and producers Anil Agarwal and Kanta Rao . The copies of the notice were also made available to the media and it mentions that Mangal Pandey's extended family lives in Nagwan and were not consulted before the film's shooting began .

The respondents had been given 30 days to reply to the notice , failing which the Committee plans to approach the court .
