Subhash Ghai’s ‘Karz’ Was Not A Hit!
- Abid           Let us know what you think about this story

Trust some media people to not get their facts right. No sooner did the news of T-Series acquiring the remaking rights of Subhash Ghai’s ‘Karz’ come than the media went ballistic over the deal.

No harm in that! But in their excitement, newspaper and satellite channels forgot that ‘Karz’ was not a box-office hit when it was released in 1980.

Every newspaper and T.V channel called ‘Karz’ a hit or a superhit but the fact is that the film did not make money at the box-office in many circuits as it did well in only a handful of cities. It fetched commission in circuits like Bombay and South but in most other circuits, it either barely covered its cost or not even that!

Perhaps, this should be a signal to Satish Kaushik, who has been assigned the task of directing the remake with Himesh Reshammiya in the lead, to avoid the mistake of the original. And yes, this acquisition could also start a trend of deals of remaking rights of unsuccessful films which had the potential of clicking at the box-office but did not. The people remaking a box-office failure can correct the wrongs of the original and make a successful film.
