January 4th marked the 16th death anniversary of RD Burman, known to many as Pancham Da. Fans of RD Burman can check out an extremely entertaining and enlightening documentary about his life and music—Shemaroo has released Brahmanand Singh’s Pancham Unmixed in a DVD collectors pack which comes with a DVD of 30 video songs composed by Pancham Da, a special coffee table book titled Pancham—Strings of Eternity, and, of course, the documentary film Pancham Unmixed. Taking a non-linear approach, the 113 minutes long documentary features rare photographs and archival material, in addition to interviews with Asha Bhosle, Gulzar, Shammi Kapoor, Shakti Samant, Manna Dey, Rishi Kapoor, Pyarelal, Gulshan Bawra, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Vishal Bhardwaj, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Shantanu Moitra, Ismail Darbar, Pandit Hari Prasand Chaursia, Uttam Singh, Kavita Krishnamurthy Subramaniam, and many other celebrities. A lot of interesting insights are offered about RD Burman’s life, including about his apprenticeship to his father, how he got his first big film Teesri Manzil, his courtship, marriage and divorce with Rita Patel, the depression he faced in the later years of his life, and his restored glory with 1942, A Love Story’s music release.
