London, Jan 24 (PTI) Former Culture Club singer Boy George, who is serving a 15 month jail term for beating up a male escort, has been moved to another prison. The 47-year-old fallen star proved too much of a celebrity for Category B Pentonville prison in North London, the Mirror reported.

The singer had broke down before moving to the jail as he feared assault from inmates for being a gay but his popularity came to his rescue. The former singer spent his time in the Pentonville prison signing autographs for inmates and guards.

"The governors were taken aback by how popular he was. A lot of the guys are of the age when they remember what a big star he was and how good the Culture Club songs were. But some officers were being too kind and giving him smokes," a source told the newspaper.

"It's ironic that he was worried about getting beaten up in Pentonville but all that happened was people showered him with so much attention and kindness that they had to move him anyway," the source added.

Boy George, whose real name is George O'Dowd, has been moved to another prison which is a less stringent.
