Mumbai/Ahmedabad, Mar 20 (PTI) Actress Nandita Das' directorial debut "Firaaq", set in the backdrop of post-riots Gujarat, opened today to a lukewarm response in theatres across the country including the Narendra Modi-ruled state. In Mumbai, the film, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Dipti Naval, Tisca Chopra and Sanjay Suri among others, opened to box office collections between seven and 10 per cent. "The film is purposeful and powerful and drives home the message in the most convincing manner without taking sides," trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh said in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, after much drama yesterday about its fate, the film was screened in all but two multiplexes in Gujarat. "Firaaq has been released in all the multiplexes expect two in Gujarat," Ashok Purohit, owner of City Pulse group of multiplexes, said in Ahmedabad. It is only not being screened in Wide Angle and City Gold groups of multiplexes who have some problems, he said. In Delhi, the film got a lukewarm response from the audiences.
