It would be interesting to compare what the producers/distributors were demanding from the national multiplex chains when they decided to boycott them in April this year, and what they actually got.Although producers and distributors started out by saying that they wanted 50 percent of the nett box-office collections in the first week, they changed their demand by insisting on 50 percent in not just the first week but in all the following weeks too. Multiplex operators, on their part, were vociferous in their claim that they couldn’t part with 50 percent revenue, at least not to each and every film. The settlement reached at advocates that every film, big and small, hit and flop, would get 50 percent of the nett revenue, but only in the first week.
But all said and done, since producers were demanding benefits from the multiplex chains and not the other way round, it is the producers/distributors who are smiling post-settlement even though all their demands have not been met. And the multiplex operators are unhappy although they’ve successfully resisted producers/distributors from completely having their way.
