Tapan Sinha conferred lifetime achievement award

Kolkata, June 20 (PTI) Noted filmmaker Tapan Sinha was today conferred a lifetime achievement award for his "outstanding contribution to Indian cinema". The award was handed over to the octogenarian director at his New Alipore residence in south Kolkata by Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunshi and West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

The award has been instituted by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of India's Independence.

Sinha, who could not be present at the award-giving function in Delhi for his failing health, said in a brief speech, "I have learnt so many things in my film life. And till today, I am carrying on the task of learning. Every now and then I am learning. There is no end to learning. I have more to learn till at the fag end of my life." Starting his film career in 1946 with "Ankush", Sinha delved deep into films dealing with subjects of social relevance some of which earned him wide acclaim in the country and abroad.

His films like "Kabuliwala", "Jhinder Bandi" (Prisoner of Zenda), "Kshudita Pasan" and "Ek Doctor ki Maut" among others won the hearts of millions.
