Varma, T-series reach settlement on copyright row; FIR quashed

Varma had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on June 13, 2006 under which copyrights of 14 of his films' songs and audio-visuals was to be with Bhushan's company.

The films included "Shiva," "Nishabd," "Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag" and "Sarkar Raj." However, disagreements over the contract surfaced after Bhushan allegedly failed to pay Varma for rights of the film "Darwaza Band Rakho" in July 2006.

Varma then witheld the copy of "Shiva" for lack of payments from Bhushan for the earlier film. Bhushan then paid him Rs 50 lakh, but such disagreements continued regarding "Nishabd" and other films, according to case details.

But when "Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag" was made, Bhushan allegedly pirated its copies without Varma's nod. The filmmaker then stopped working with Bhushan.

Bhushan, pursuant to Varma's refusal to act on the MOU, filed a case in a Noida court on January 23 this year. He claimed he had made full payments to Varma and produced documents in this regard. Hence, the contract cannot be cancelled, the T-series MD argued.
