´Gumnaam´ Se ´Agyaat´ Tak!

It was way back in 1965 when "Gumnaam Hai Koi", Lata Mangeshkar's evergreen song gave goospimples to most viewers who had gone watch Raja Nawathe's Manoj Kumar, Nanda, Pran, Helen and Mehmood starrer, 'Gumnaam'. Yes, the the film with a watertight script about how seven people mysteriously win a free vacation. On the way to their destination, the plane has engine trouble and they are left abandoned in a remote seaside location. They find shelter in a large mansion inhabited by a comical butler Mehmood. One by one, they are murdered and the remaining vacationers try to figure out why they were chosen for the trip and what they have in common. The film is still an institution for makers who want to delve into subjects dealing with suspense, horror and mystery.

Cut to 2009 and we have Ram Gopal Varma's 'Agyaat', starring a relatively unknown cast barring Priyanka (Nisha) Kothari. The movie's plot revolves around a film unit on a shoot in a remote jungle in Sri Lanka. They settle at a place with bare minimal facilities run by a strange and quirky man called Setu. The shoot is put on hold when a camera malfunctions and they have to wait for a replacement. To kill time they decide to go on a trek into the jungle with the Setu, the caretaker of the jungle.

When the Setu is found mauled one night the panic and fear of the darkness of the unknown world sets in and the movie take an about turn as each one present there is fighting for their lives from something they have not seen and also suspecting each other. From then on it is a desperate struggle to survive against that unknown entity. And as their numbers dwindle the suppressed passions among them come forth, they realize that it is not only their lives they are fighting for.

So who is it? Some old enemy, an unknown curse of the jungle or is it one of the crew members?

The answer is still 'gumnaam' and we will be known on 24th July, as that is when 'Agyaat' releases!
