Short films focus of 10th Osian´s film festival

New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI) The 10th anniversary of the prestigious Osian's-Cinefan, one of Asia's leading film festival will focus on the influence of literature and cinema on each other as well feature for the fist time a slew of short fiction films from Asian and Arab countries. The ten-day festival beginning here on July 10 will screen over 200 films with over 13 world premieres as well as for the first time have short fiction films of less than 40 minutes duration.

Organisers of the festival, established in 1999 say the event has something new to offer every year. "We try and curate it differently every year. We are bringing in literature into the festival in a big way this year," Lalita Padgoanker, joint festival director told reporters here today.

There would be a section where films, a mixture of Indian and foreign, based on novels would be screened along with a discussion amongst novelists and filmmakers to find out the dynamics between the two. "Chetan Bhagat, Kunal Basu, Jaishree Misra, Chitra Divakaruni, Basu Chatterjee and David Philips would debate on the topic Novel in adaptation: Has great literature spawned great cinema?" Books by Kunal, Chetan and Jaishree have inspired various Bollywood films.

Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz, Alain Raobbe-Grillet, renowned cinema personalities, Taiwanese director Edward Yoiund and Indonesian actress Christine Hakim who is also the President of the Asian-Arab jury would be honoured.

"We will have with us Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan who won the Cannes award for his film 'Three Monkeys' and Kiyoshi Kurosawa who made 'Tokyo Sonata' along with several others," said Indu Srikent, joint festival director.
