As per India's leading trade magazine, Film Information, the deal between producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Indian Film Company (Studio 18)for '3 Idiots' had to be called off before it could be inked.Although both the parties are tight-lipped about what went wrong, reliable sources reveal that the two parties to the deal had shaken hands after settling the terms but there was neither anything in writing between them nor had money exchanged hands. It is learnt that the deal was for the worldwide rights, but after agreeing on the same, Chopra wanted the prospective distributor (Indian Film Company) to leave the audio rights as he wanted to sell the same to Sony.
Well, IFC agreed to relinquish the music rights and proportionately reduce the value of the deal to Rs. 85 crore. Next, Vinod Chopra wanted to sell the Overseas and home video rights to another party. Effectively then, what would remain with IFC would be India theatrical and satellite rights only. But before the deal for those rights could be signed, Vinod Chopra changed his mind once again and decided to keep the India distribution rights for himself. Incidentally, Chopra ultimately sold the audio rights to T-Series rather than Sony. Reportedly, he got Rs. 12 crore from T-Series for the same.
