Mumbai, Sept 3 (PTI) Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, who was conferred with the National Film Award for 'Traffic Signal' in Delhi yesterday, has donated his prize money to the families of three farmers from Vidarbha who committed suicide in face of extreme financial hardship. "I never gave much thought to donating any prize money to a social cause. This year, I came across many stories of farmers who had ended their lives to evade the debt trap they were in. It was extremely moving for me and hence I decided to give the money to them. I always wanted to help the underprivileged and this is an honour to serve the society," Madhur said. The families of three farmers Kashinath Dagdu, Prakash Darne and Shamrao Kannake have been chosen by Bhandarkar for disbursing Rs 2.5 lakh among them.
Prakash Darne from Yavatmal committed suicide on June 28 last year as he could not pay his loan of Rs 56,000. One of his daughter is visually impaired. Shamrao Kannake committed suicide on February 17 last year as he was unable to repay Rs 16,200 that he had borrowed. On the same day, Shamrao's father too ended his life. Madhur said he shortlisted the three families after thorough research on background of several farmers' families. "It is the love and affection of the audience that gives me immense freedom of creativity and deliver something very new and out of league. As my movies always portray a real face of the society, I really want to help people," said Madhur, who has won national award for the third time.
