He may have been considered the 'least successful among the Khan trio' all these years but Salman Khan is finally 'having the last laugh' with his latest film 'Dabangg' turning out to be the biggest blockbuster ever, netting over Rs 80 crore in its opening week.

The super success of 'Dabangg' has overnight catapulted Salman once again to the the status of a superstar, bringing him at par with his contemporaries Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan.

Starting off as an underdog which not many in the industry gave much of a chance at the box office, 'Dabangg' has turned out to be the 'dark horse', evoking an unprecedented response across the country.

With earnings (distributor's share) of Rs. 46-47 crore in its opening week, 'Dabangg' has emerged as the biggest opener ever of Hindi cinema, trade sources said.

The sources said the first week's earnings of 'Dabangg' crossed the box office figures of 'Three Idiots' which holds the record for biggest ever opening in history of Indian cinema.

Ever since its release on September 10 'Dabangg' has been drawing unprecedented crowds especially in small towns and cities.

"The film has set new records in every circuit," as per trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

What is remarkable is that the film has done excellent business at single screens as well as multiplexes, a feat which only 'Three Idiots' has managed in the recent past.

Trade analysts say the rocking response to 'Dabangg' has established the drawing power of Salman as an actor.

With 'Dabangg' Salman seems to have given a fitting response to those in film circles who cast doubts over his box office draw especially after lukewarm response to his last film 'London Dreams' .

For those who termed success of his last hit 'Wanted' as a fluke, 'Dabangg' is a reminder that Salman commands a huge popularity among the masses.

In fact, trade observers say audience across the country have lapped up the 'no nonsense cop act' by Salman in 'Dabangg'.

Salman's portrayal as the 'fearless' cop Chulbul Pandey with a 'swashbuckling streak' has endeared him to the masses.

Also the film brings to screen the unique pairing of Salman and Sonakshi Sinha, daughter of yesteryears' actor Shatrughan Sinha. Sonakshi makes her debut with the film.

The film also boasts of some amazing action sequences performed by Salman, who sports a moustache.

Trade sources said the success of the film has catapulted Salman to status of a superstar which has eluded the actor in recent years even as his contemporaries Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan were bestowed with the the title .

They say 'Dabangg' is the third blockbuster in Salman's career after 'Maine Pyar Kiya' and 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun'. In terms of box office figure, it is the actor's biggest hits till date .

In fact, trade analysis term 'Dabangg' as Salman's 'Dilwale Dulhaniyan Le Jayenge', the film which proved a turning point in the film career of ShahRukh khan .

No wonder, post the success of 'Dabangg', everyone wants a piece of Salman. The film has earned Salman lot of fans in South India.

Producer B. K. Krishnan in South is planning a film on the life of Salman . Tentatively titled 'Anna Salman', the film will feature all highs and lows of Salman's life and all that led the star to reach the status he enjoys today.

Produced by Arbaaz Khan and Ashtavinayak films and directed by Abhinav Kashyap, 'Dabangg' has Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Dimple Kapadia and Vinod Khanna in key roles.
