Dhaka, Nov 20 (PTI) Politics has taken a toll on a veteran Bangladeshi actor's marriage life -- it has severed her nuptial cord. Sarah Begum, popularly known as Kabari, has been divorced by her husband after 30 years of married life apparently because she was nominated for contesting the upcoming polls by ex-premier Sheikh Hasina's Awami League. "Reason (that I got the divorce letter) is I've got the Awami League nomination," the 62-year-old actress told reporters yesterday after obtaining the nomination for vying from a constituency in suburban Narayanganj.
AL announced her name as the party candidate in the upcoming polls in the constituency in preference to former lawmaker Shamim Osman, who is the nephew of Kabari's husband. "But actually its part of a plot, he (Babu) divorced me at the instigation of some quarters as I got the nomination," Kabari said. Osman, however, is now on the run abroad to evade justice, as he is wanted in a number of graft and criminal cases. Kabari holds the record of performing highest number of movies since late 1960s as the most cherished heroine of Bangla film. Winner of a number of national and international awards, Kabari married Babu Sarwar in 1978, leaving her first husband Chitta Chowdhury.
