Shahrukh to receive Datukship wearing Malaysian costume

"This is the first time that we are using this particular songket (type of woven cloth) for a Datukship recipient and Shah Rukh Khan will be first to wear the official samping," a top official of the state government said.

'Samping' is a piece of cloth men tie around the waist and which falls to the length of the long shirt. Baju Melayu is similar to a kurta pajama.

The award will be conferred on him tomorrow at a special ceremony to be attended by 1000 guests in Malacca and to be broadcast live.

Baju Melayu to be worn by the Bollywood heartthrob is worth about 6600 rupees and is made of Italian crepe and has been specially tailored for him.

The conferring of the title Datuk to Khan has infuriated and irritated several people across the country including artists associations who feel that a local artist could have been named for the award.

Khan was chosen as he had shot some scenes in two films including 'one-two-ka-four', which the government feels would help in bringing tourists to Malacca.
