The story reminices of the English movie Godfather, which has been derived into Hindi versions many times before.
The story revolves around three friends, Yash(Sanjay Kapoor), Suraj(SalmanKhan), and Pratna(Shilpa Shetty) who are joined at the hip in college.Yash┬┤s father (Paresh Rawal) is a prominent figure in underworld crime andis constantly at loggerheads with his arch rival Kiran Kumar. Yash wantsnothing to do with his father┬┤s business or his ill-earned wealth andprefers to spend his time with Suraj and Pratna.
When Kiran Kumar makes an attempt on Paresh┬┤s life, crippling him. Yash goescrazy and, in a rage, kills Kiran Kumar whose son, Baba(Nirmal Pandey) thenbecomes ready for revenge.
Through emotional blackmail from his now crippled father Yash is roped intotaking over his father┬┤s business. Unable to see his friend get sucked intoa world of crime, Suraj leaves the city and returns to his village.
Once established on his father┬┤s ┬┤throne┬┤ Yash marries Pratna, everything ispeachy for a while. Then Baba makes several threats against Pratna causingYash to become more anxious and defensive.
Meanwhile, Suraj has become a Police Officer and is ordered to return to the city undercover to gather evidenceof Yash┬┤s criminal activities. So Suraj, without revealing his new foundprofession to Yash, takes on the task of protecting Pratna by becoming herauzaar.
Suraj then finds out that Yash┬┤s business is legitimate and someone else iscommiting crimes under Yash┬┤s name. The story takes a twist when Yash findsout that Suraj has a liking for uniforms - of the police variety, and thetwo become sworn enemies.
For a first-time director Sohail Khan (Salman┬┤s younger sibling) has done abrilliant job! Salman Khan has given a great performance and Sanjay Kapoor also gives a natural and controlledperformance without becoming overly melodramatic at any time. Shilpa Shettygets to do more for a change. Nirmal Pandeyplays ┬┤Baba┬┤ with such conviction that one really believes this psycho is forreal.
The songs ┬┤Hum Aur Tum┬┤, ┬┤Thahra Hai Ye Sama┬┤, ┬┤Masti Ka Aalam┬┤ and ┬┤TujheKhas Fursat Mein┬┤ are used effectively. However, the Macarena-inspired ┬┤DilLe Le Lena┬┤ and the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - inspired ┬┤I Love You┬┤ do nothingto advance the storyline. Ironically, these are the two chartbusters fromthe soundtrack!
