Comparisons to R.D.Burman’s seventies soundtrack, “Jawani Diwani” will only spoil your enjoyment of this 2005 soundtrack of the same name. This album isn’t terrible but it comes nowhere near to the Burman classic! The film’s tag line promises “a youthful joyride” and the music certainly lives up to the promise.

A singer with the unfortunate name of Bobby Moon begins the album with the title track, “Jawani Diwani”. The track is more of an English pop song with a bit of Hindi thrown in. It has the same sound as sundry other pop songs but the catchy way in which the words, “jawani diwani” are sung will stay with you for hours. The song is composed by Clinton Cerejo who impressively crooned the English ballad, “I Just Wanna Spend My Life With You” from Neal ‘N’ Nikki.

“Sini Ne Sini Ne” belongs to a similar genre as the title track but is less appealing. Siddarth-Suhaas’ composition lacks melody and the dry rendition by Suhaas really doesn’t help. Why the film makers decided to include a ‘remix’ version of this song is a mystery.

Composers, Sajid-Wajid, are responsible for the rest of the soundtrack. Skillful singing is the highlight of the slow but haunting, “Tere Ishq Mein”. Rahul Saxena, Shadaab Faridi and Arif Shaikh provide memorable vocals in a song which deserves some attention.

Unfortunately, KK and Suzanne are burdened with a boring dance number, “Jiska Mujhe Intezaar”. The track has a forgettable tune with unimpressive lyrics and not even the duo’s good singing can save this number. Skip it!

Don’t worry; there are a couple of songs worth buying this soundtrack for. One of which is, “Dil Diwana”, an Arabian style number with plenty of belly dancing music to keep you moving. The chorus is sung in Arabic by Hamza while the excellent Sonu Nigam and Sowmya Raoh do the Hindi honours. This is definitely a repeat worthy track – enjoy!

Abhijit Sawant then shows us why he was crowned ‘Indian Idol’ in the duet, “Yaad Teri Yaad”. Abhijit makes singing seem so easy, as he glides through the number hitting every note perfectly. Shreya Ghoshal also impresses, it’s just a pity that the song is so generic, sounding similar to hundreds of love songs before it.

Sunidhi Chauhan just might be the most versatile singer since Asha Bhosle! This girl can sing anything, although she does tend to get more than her fare share of ‘item’ numbers. I’m not complaining though because these ‘item’ numbers usually end up being the best songs on the album! This certainly seems to be the case here as Sunidhi uses her powerful voice to bring life to “Dilruba”. This song also has an Arabian influence and an extremely mellifluous tune that you’ll be humming for hours. There are shades of “Dhoom Machale” but the song definitely has its own identity. Encore!

Jawani Diwani may not be award winning stuff but it will put a smile on your face and get your feet tapping. Amidst the stresses of everyday life, Jawani Diwani will provide a welcome break.
