Which Bollywood fan doesn’t know the lyrics to that famous song in the classic film “Amar Akbar Anthony”, where Amitabh (in the voice of Kishore Kumar) sings, “My name is Anthony Gonsalves…..Mein duniya mein akela hoon”. I’m sure that everyone’s heart feels the tug of nostalgia upon reading the previous sentence. So it is, that producer Bhushan Kumar (T-Series) hopes to use the embers of nostalgia to flame the fires of a hopefully super-hit movie.

“My Name is Anthony Gonsalves” has a built in curiosity factor, and by this time, you are probably asking yourself, “Is this a sequel to Amar Akbar Anthony”? Perhaps thankfully, the answer to that question is no, though a little later in 2008, the brother’s Khan (Salman, Sohail, and Arbaaz) are going to be starring in a remake of that classic.

Another question you might be asking yourself is, “Which superstar is going to be the hero of this film?” To which, I have to answer: No existing superstar will be the hero of this film. You see, Bhushan Kumar and director E. Niwas have decided to launch newcomer Nikhil Dwivedi with the hopes that he will be the next “big” thing. Perhaps by this point you have seen some of the trailers to the movie, and are shrugging your shoulders with a big, “whatever”; however, you should realize that Bollywood has a habit of creating stars out of thin air every now and then. Sometimes, even though it’s rare, said star is not the son or daughter or cousin or second cousin or third distant cousin of another famous actor. Such is the case with Nikhil Dwivedi who hopes to be the next Shah Rukh Khan. Starring opposite him, as his love interest is Amrita Rao, who has dumped the pious sari clad image she cultivated in “Vivah” for a miniskirt wearing “sexy young thing” that dares to bare look that has her male fans waiting in anticipation. Along with the lead pair, the cast includes Anupam Kher, D Santosh, Hrishita Bhatt, Lilette Dubey, Mithun Chakraborty, Mukesh Tiwari, Pawan Malhotra, and Saurabh Shukla.

What about the story you ask? Nikhil Dwivedi plays the title character who dreams of hitting it big one day. He starts off, as many would be dreamers do, by becoming a bartender. Unbeknownst to him, the three brothers who own the bar are conducting illegal activities. Unfortunately one day, Anthony is witness to a brutal crime and is forced to fight for his life. Along the way, he meets and falls in love with Amrita Arora’s character, but will he survive long enough to make an honest woman out of her?

Director E. Niwas is known for his excellent direction of hard-boiled crime thrillers (“Shool”), and so the audience is guaranteed a hard-hitting movie with some romance. The cast is made up of many National Award winners (including the director himself), the music is by numero uno music director Pritam, and the choreographers include Farah Khan and Ganesh Hegde. With a solid pedigree of talent behind this film, we are sure to see an entertaining movie.

Don’t be too surprised if "My Name is Anthony Gonsalves” turns out to be the unexpected sleeper hit of 2008. Perhaps we will see the birth of a new star in Nikhil Dwivedi. Shah Rukh Khan thinks Nikhil’s great, but then again, his production company Red Chilies Entertainment is the line producer for the movie.

All in all, this film should be a paisa vasool entertainer with all the requisite Hindi film drama, romance, dishum-dishum fighting, and foot-tapping numbers to please even the most cynical of Bollywood fans. Be sure to check this one out at a theater near you on January 11th, 2008!
