Sometimes, the title track of a TV show becomes more popular than a newly released song from a film. Despite the digital revolution, TV still has the biggest reach among the masses and when a TV show becomes a hit, its title song that is played during the opening credits, becomes popular too.
That’s exactly what has happened to the title track of the TV show ‘Koppa’ that is currently being telecast on DD National. The song has been composed by Bapi Bhattacharya (of the duo Bapi Tutul) and penned by Sahil Sultanpuri.
Talking about the process of writing the song, Sahil says, I have written lines like “woh phoolon se naazuk kaanton se lada karti hai, ghar ki deewaron ko khushboo se bhara karti hai….” that describes the kind of person Koppa, the female protagonist is. Koppa is a flower that is found only in Assam. The characteristics of the female protagonist have similarities to the flower. That’s the reason she has been named Koppa. I tried my best to define her through the title song.”
The show has been produced by Ramesh Sippy’s Ramesh Sippy Entertainment. Working with the veteran filmmaker, who has to his credit films like ‘Sholay’ and ‘Shaan’ was a long-time dream for Sahil which was fulfilled with this project.
“Right from the first draft till the final draft, we sat and discussed everything with Ramesh ji. Kiran (Juneja Sippy), too, was closely involved with the creation of the song and gave some valuable inputs which helped us greatly. Working with Ramesh Sippy Entertainment was a huge honour. The song has been beautifully composed by Bapi Bhattacharya. Dheeraj Mishra, who has written the show, is an old friend of mine. Working with the entire team was a memorable experience”, Sahil states.
Today, there is no dearth of channels that air a plethora of TV serials. ‘Koppa’, in Sahil’s opinion, is different from the kind of shows that is being churned out today.
Talking about what sets this show apart, he says, “As we know, most TV shows in India are high on melodrama. What makes ‘Koppa’ unique in today’s scenario is the fact that it is steeped in realism. After all these years, DD National is still has the biggest reach among all the channels. The channel also must be lauded for making shows that talk about Indian values. Because of being aired on DD National, ‘Koppa’ has reached out to people residing in both cities and the villages.”
