Bhavesh Joshi Superhero – Music Review

Though ‘Bhavesh Joshi Superhero’ is about a common man turning into a vigilante and taking on the system and does not have an extended romantic track as such, one still has good expectations from the music of the film as it brings the team of ‘Udaan’ and ‘Lootera’ together. Music composer Amit Trivedi, lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya and director Vikramaditya Motwane – the team has always delivered great music and without Motwane, too, Trivedi and Bhattacharya have done some good work together. There are four tracks in the album one expects the music to deal with themes like justice, heroism, bravery and perhaps, patriotism.

“Hum Hai Insaaf” opens with the very cool techno-based prelude which one also heard in the trailer of the film. The track has Amit’s stamp all over it and instantly reminds one of the kind of sound he was synonymous with in his early days as a composer. The lyrics (Anurag Kashyap, Babu Haabi and Naezy) are simple and convey the idea behind the track pretty effectively. Babu Haabi and Naezy, co-lyricists on the song along with Anurag Kashyap, do a good job behind the mic as well.

Up next is “Chavanprash”, the much talked about promotional track featuring the two Kapoor cousins (Arjun and Harshvardhan). The songs benefits largely from Amitabh Bhattacharya’s quirky lyrics. Sample this, “swasthya ke liye achcha hai bada, chumma yeh tera sachcha hai bada”. The lyrics crack you up and the singers (Divya Kumar and the choral vocalists) render the song with just the right amount of fun and panache.

The song which comes closest to the feel and the vibe of the ‘Udaan’ album is “Tafreeh”. In fact, it sounds like something Motwane liked during the music sittings of his debut film and decided to use it in this film. Amit has composed similar tracks in the past but for some reason, it brought back memories of the Udaan soundtrack for me. Perhaps, that is because “Tafreeh” talks about freedom, finding oneself and other themes which ‘Udaan’, the film, was synonymous with.

“Qasam Kha Li” has an interesting mix of a sombreness and determination. In this track, the protagonist talks about taking on the baton to bring about a change even if nobody stands by him. The song has a nice, upbeat rhythm to it and Papon’s voice works very well for it. The song, in parts, reminded me of “Phir Wohi” (‘Qaidi Band’), a track composed by Trivedi which also talked about optimism.

The music of ‘Bhavesh Joshi Superhero’ is quite nice but it does not match up to the standards of an ‘Udaan’ or a ‘Lootera’. Amitabh Bhattacharya is clearly the star of the album as his highly imaginative lyrics stay in your mind long after you have heard the entire album. The album is yet another indicator of the fact that Amit, perhaps, needs to reinvent with a fresher sound and make sure that his new songs do not sound like his older ones.
