Acid attack – a violent act through which the perpetrator strives to disfigure the face of the person whom he throws the chemical at. In India and abroad, we get to hear about so many cases wherein a man (or even women, at times) throws acid at a woman’s face. Why does the person do that? There could be multiple reasons for that – a scorned lover or who is jealous of that person for some reason. Whatever the reason be, the person who commits such a crime can only be categorised as a monster.
‘Chhapaak’, filmmaker Meghna Gulzar’s new film, deals with the aforementioned issue. Featuring Deepika Padukone as the central protagonist, the film aims to bring to the fore the plight of the women who become the victims of such heinous acts of violence and the way it affects their lives. To put it simply, the trailer packs a solid punch and puts across visuals that move you, anger you and compel you to think. Meghna and co-writer Atika Chohan have dressed up the film as an investigative thriller and it seems to have a narrative structure which is slightly similar to Meghna’s own ‘Talvar’ (2015).
The fact that Deepika had tremendous faith in the script can be gauged by the fact that she has put her weight behind the film as one of its producers; this is the first film co-produced by her newly founded production house KA Productions. Meghna got a new lease of life as a filmmaker with ‘Talvar’ and she followed up with the compelling ‘Raazi’. Now, with ‘Chhapaak’, one expects her to have another successful, and most importantly memorable, film in her filmography.
